The Puebla/Cholula area is home to numerous museums including the well-known Museo Internacional del Barroco and Museo Amparo. Many of these lesser-known museums are wonderful places to visit. Recently we had an opportunity to visit the Cast del Titere Marionetas Mexicanas. It houses 813 puppets from the Rosete Aranda-Espinal Collection, the most important in Latin America, and 630 puppets from the Guiñol Época de Oro Collection. These two great lineages make up the Mexican puppets belonging to the National Institute of Fine Arts. The museum is in the historical La Constancia, the first textile factory to use automated machinery for textile making.

The museum is housed on two floors with majority of the collection on the second floor. The reception, theater and interactive room are located on the first floor. Entrance fee is Mex$ 40 for adults and $20 for children. The main museum on the second floor is organized into various themes such as:

  • Fables and Tales
  • Literature
  • The Circus
  • Russian Influence
  • Mystery of the Orient
  • Rituals and Traditions
  • Mexican Folklore
  • Puppets Rosete Aranda
  • Apotheosis
  • Cueto Family Room
  • Heroes of the Country
  • Popular Music
  • Mexican History
  • Daily life
  • Opera Hall (Power of the Voice)
  • Lola Cueto’s Room

Many of the themes have both stationary exhibits and videos from a typical puppet show featuring that theme. A guide accompanies you and gives a more detailed description of the exhibits. My companion and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this museum.

This is a small museum but very well organized and well worth your time. There are other museums in the same La Constancia complex and many were closed. We plan to visit them in the future and hopefully write about them. Links to several other lesser-known museums in the Puebla/Cholula area are provided below.

Safe and Happy Travels. If Lupita Travels can assist you with tours in the Puebla/Cholula area, we will be happy to hear from you.
